How Women’s Golf Skirts & Skorts Have Redefined Tradition

For centuries, golf has been a sport steeped in tradition and etiquette. From the attire worn on the course to the rules governing gameplay, every aspect is imbued with a sense of decorum and propriety. But, one might say the rules around ladies golf attire has undergone a quiet revolution in recent decades – a revolution centered around the humble skirt and skort. The skort, a hybrid garment, combining the practicality of shorts with the feminine flair of a skirt, has become a staple in women's golf wardrobes, both on and off the professional circuit. Whereas, the ladies' golf skirt has a rich history from its humble beginnings to its modern iterations. Not only has the golf skirt been a symbol of femininity on the course, but has has directly impacted women players' abilities and performance.

A Brief History of Golf Apparel

The earliest days of ladies' golf saw female players conforming to the fashion standards of the time, often sporting long, cumbersome skirts that hindered movement and comfort on the course. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as golf gained popularity among women, there was a gradual shift towards more practical and athletic attire.

The first ladies' golf skirts were typically made from heavy materials like wool or tweed, echoing the fashion trends of the era. These skirts were ankle-length or even longer. These cumbersome garments significantly hindered a woman's ability to swing a golf club freely and move comfortably on the course. It was a time when propriety reigned supreme, and attire was a reflection of one's social standing. Just imagine playing in long skirts and heels as our golfing predecessors were required to do?

As the 20th century dawned, a gradual shift towards more practical and functional attire began. Pioneer golfers like Dorothy Campbell Hurd Howe recognized the need for greater mobility and started experimenting with shorter skirt lengths. By the 1920s, knee-length skirts became more common, allowing women to swing with greater ease and enjoy the sport without excessive physical constraints. During the 1920s and 1930s, the emergence of the "flapper" style brought about shorter, more streamlined skirts that were well-suited to the dynamic nature of golf. These skirts often featured pleats or A-line silhouettes, providing both style and practicality for female players.

Advancements in textile technology and changing attitudes towards women's fashion revolutionized the design of ladies' golf skirts. As hemlines rose and fabrics became lighter and more breathable, golf skirts became more tailored and functional, allowing for greater freedom of movement on the course.

The 1950s and 1960s marked a golden age for ladies' golf fashion, with skirt lengths becoming increasingly daring. Inspired by the style icons of the time, such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, women embraced shorter, more form-fitting skirts that fell above the knee. This newfound freedom of movement enabled golfers to execute more dynamic swings and fully express their athletic abilities on the course.

According to Wikipedia: Montgomery Ward claimed in their 1959 Spring/Summer catalog to have invented the garment they called a skort. Their design was a short accordion pleated skirt with an attached bloomer underneath. Later, the term, skort, was applied to a design that had a pair of shorts with a flap of fabric across the front (and often the back) making the garment appear to be a skirt. In recent years, the term skort has been given to any skirt with an attached pair of shorts.

The Modern Approach: Balancing Performance and Style with the Emergence of the Skort

In the latter half of the 20th century, the influence of professional female golfers and advancements in athletic wear further transformed the design of ladies' golf skirts along with the introduction of the skort – a garment that combined the practicality of shorts with the aesthetic appeal of a skirt. The skort offered female golfers a newfound freedom of movement without sacrificing style while at the same time still maintaining a sense of modesty and femininity on the course.

As the women's liberation movement gained traction, the skort became a symbol of empowerment, allowing female athletes to embrace their athleticism without compromising their femininity. Manufacturers and designers recognized the growing demand for functional women’s golf apparel.

Initially met with skepticism, skorts gradually gained acceptance within the golfing community, thanks in part to endorsements by professional players and fashion designers. Today, they are a staple of women's golf apparel, available in various styles, fabrics, and lengths to suit individual preferences and playing conditions.

Performance fabrics such as polyester blends and moisture-wicking materials became commonplace, offering players enhanced comfort and flexibility during play.

One of the defining features of skorts & skirts is their length, which can range from mini to knee-length to maxi. The choice of length not only reflects personal taste, but also can impact comfort and performance on the golf course.

Shorter skirts & skorts, such as minis, offer a more contemporary look and greater freedom of movement, ideal for warm weather and casual play. However, they may not be suitable for more conservative golf clubs or tournaments with strict dress codes.

Knee-length golf skorts & skirts strike a balance between style and modesty, providing coverage while still allowing for ease of movement. They are popular choices for both recreational and competitive golfers, suitable for a wide range of courses and playing conditions.

If the golfing community wants to welcome younger players to their fairways without younger female players concerned about becoming embarrassed by accidentally not adhering to a strict dress code, certain level “casualization” in the game is necessary.

Today, the apparel industry has embraced the skort concept offering women numerous design options where it can be worn for many occasions, not just for golf. Skorts are actually a fashion statement for many women who have never stepped out onto a golf course.

The Role of Golf Skorts and Skirts Length in Golf Course Etiquette

While shorter skirt and skort lengths became increasingly accepted, there was also a growing concern about maintaining a level of professionalism and decorum on the course. This led to the establishment of dress code regulations by various golf organizations, ensuring that golf skort & skirt lengths remained within appropriate boundaries.

At some golf courses, particularly those with a more traditional or formal atmosphere, there may be expectations regarding skirt or skort length. Players are often advised to choose modest, knee-length styles to maintain a respectful appearance on the course.

Back in the summer of 2017, the LPGA stirred controversy when it introduced a stringent dress code for its players, sparking significant backlash. Among the provisions was a mandate specifying that the length of skirts, skorts, and shorts must ensure that the bottom area remains concealed, even when players are standing or bending over.

LPGA pros were sent an email which came from the LPGA Player President Vicki Goetze-Ackerman with strict new dress code rules and extensive list of clothing that were no longer be allowed on course and at pro-am parties on the tour. The email  detailed not only the new regulations, but also a hefty $1,000 fine for each violation.

  • Racerback with a mock or regular collar are allowed (no collar = no racerback).
  • Plunging necklines are NOT allowed.
  • Leggings, unless under a skort or shorts, are NOT allowed.
  • Length of skirt, skort, and shorts MUST be long enough to not see your bottom area (even if covered by under shorts) at any time, standing or bent over.
  • Appropriate attire should be worn to pro-am parties. You should be dressing yourself to present a professional image. Unless otherwise told “no,” golf clothes are acceptable. Dressy jeans are allowed, but cut-offs or jeans with holes are NOT allowed.
  • Workout gear and jeans (all colors) NOT allowed inside the ropes
  • Joggers are NOT allowed

The new regulations where not greeted with enthusiasm. Quite the opposite.

The progressive and influential youth magazine, Teen Vogue, said the code set players and women in general “way back”. The LPGA eventually retracted the requirements.

The crux of the debate centered around the delicate balance between adhering to golf's long-standing traditions of decorum and accommodating the evolving needs of modern athletes. Proponents of shorter skorts argued that restricting length hindered performance and went against the spirit of athletic competition. Conversely, those in favor of longer skorts maintained that a certain level of modesty should be upheld, preserving the sport's genteel image.

Today, most golf clubs and tournaments have specific guidelines regarding ladies golf skirt & skort lengths for both amateur and professional players with many requiring skirts to be no shorter than 4-5 inches above the knee. Some clubs may even enforce a specific inseam length requirement, typically ranging from 14 to 18 inches.

For professional golfers competing on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, the dress code guidelines are more explicit. According to the LPGA's Dress Code Policy, skirts, skorts, and shorts must not exceed 5 inches above the knee, measured from the middle of the knee cap. This regulation aims to maintain a level of professionalism and respect for the sport while allowing players to compete comfortably. It's important to note that dress code regulations are not solely focused on skirt lengths; they often encompass broader guidelines regarding appropriate attire, such as prohibitions on jeans, t-shirts, and revealing or overly casual clothing.

Finding Your Perfect Golf Skirt or Skort Length

When it comes to golf attire, one size certainly does not fit all. From fabric choices to design, to fit preferences, every golfer has their own unique style. And when it comes to golf skirts or skorts, finding the perfect length is key to feeling comfortable and confident on the course.

We offer some suggestions as to how you can figure out what is your preferred skort or skirt length.

IF you have that one go-to golf skirt or skort that fits just right, take it out of the closet and lay it flat on a surface. With a fabric measuring tape, measure the length from the top of the waistband to the bottom hem. This simple step will give you a baseline for your preferred length. But remember, your baseline length will vary depending upon where the actual rise of the waistline “sits” when you are wearing the skirt or skort. The “rise” affects how a golf skirt or skort looks and feels.

Higher Rise: Golf skirts or skorts with a higher rise typically sit above the belly button, potentially making the it feel shorter. If you prefer this style, but need to adhere to a club’s dress code for a certain length, you may need to opt for a longer skirt or skort than usual.

Mid-Rise: This classic rise sits at your natural waist and is the most common and preferred option for golf skorts & skirts. Choosing a mid-rise for either s golf skort or skirt ensures consistency across most styles and brands.

Low-Rise: Golf skorts or skirts with a contemporary low-rise sit below the natural waist, which can sometimes make them appear longer than higher-rise options. If you prefer a lower rise, you may want to consider a shorter length to achieve your desired look.

As an example: Your measured olf skirt or skort is 18” from waistband to hem. However depending upon the rise ( high / mid / low) it will appear shorter or longer when you are wearing it.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to wear styles that make you feel comfortable and confident on the course. Don’t worry about conforming to others’ expectations—focus on what makes you feel your best. Whether you prefer a mini, knee-length, or maxi skort or skirt, embrace your personal style and play your best game. Unless, of course the length needs to conform to a club’s or tournament’s length rules.

For those playing at private clubs or courses with strict dress codes, the recommendation is to call the pro shop and inquire about their specific guidelines. Many clubs enforce a "club appropriate" length, which typically means the golf skirt or skort cannot be shorter than 4 inches above the middle of the knee or mid-thigh. However, it's important to note that this measurement can vary based on a golfer's height. Obviously, a 5'1" player will require a different length skirt or skort than someone who stands at 5'11".

Public and semi-private courses, on the other hand, tend to be more lenient with their dress code rules, allowing golfers greater flexibility in their golf apparel choices. In these settings, the emphasis shifts from conformity to personal preference, empowering women to select lengths that prioritize their comfort, mobility, and overall enjoyment of the game.

While the length of a golf skirt may seem like a minor detail, its impact on a player's abilities and confidence on the course cannot be overstated. Whether for regular players seeking comfort and mobility or women professionals striving for excellence and professionalism, the right golf skirt can make all the difference in a player's performance and experience on the fairways and greens.

The evolution of women’s golf apparel has brought about many innovations, including the versatile skort. With its combination of style and functionality, the skort has become a popular choice among female golfers of all skill levels.

Manufacturers and designers are constantly innovating, experimenting with new materials and designs that cater to the diverse needs of modern golfers. From moisture wicking fabrics to ergonomic cuts, the golf skirt or skort of the future may look vastly different from its predecessors, while still maintaining a delicate balance between performance and tradition.

As the sport of golf continues to evolve, it's likely that the design and perception of ladies' golf skirts & skorts will also undergo transformations. With a growing emphasis on inclusive and empowerment, there may be a push for more flexibility in dress code regulations, allowing female golfers to express their individuality while maintaining a respectful presence on the course.

Technological advancements in fabric engineering and garment design may also play a role, with the development of even more breathable, moisture wicking, and stretch-friendly materials that enhance performance without compromising style.

Ultimately, the history of ladies' golf skirts is a reflection of the changing societal norms, athletic demands, and fashion trends that have shaped the sport over time. From the restrictive skirts of the Victorian era to the introduction of the skort, to modern, performance-driven designs, and even  to the sport's ongoing struggle to reconcile its storied past with the demands of the present and future, the evolution of golf skirts and skorts has been a journey towards empowering women to fully embrace their athletic abilities while expressing their unique styles on the fairways.
